Smith Gardens New Variety Showcase 2024
We spent July 24th in the sun, in a fishbowl of greenhouses. For us Northwest natives, it was hot. The saving grace was the flowers….so many new ones for 2025…and the ice cream bars after lunch.
When we plan for next season, we all know that viewing these plants in our NW climate is important. A few just pooped out-it could be for several reasons, but we all need to see that too. We also love seeing familiar faces at events like this: customers, suppliers, and yes, our competitors—people we’ve been working with for years.
The albums, but first a few highlights:

Canna Cannova ‘Gold Leopard’
Animal-print blooms that would make Lady Gaga proud. Produced from seed, so there’s less risk of virus.

Fuchsia ‘Ballerina Royale’
Don’t let the delicate name fool you. These little fuchsias were happy and fresh in the blazing sun, blooming like crazy!

These Erysimums… not so much. 🙁
Erysimum Intense Joy (left) & Intense Passion (right).
Sometimes plants go kaput in trials, but we all know it’s not a definitive result.
We’re not sure what happened here, but we’ll keep our eyes out for how they perform elsewhere.
Calibrachoa Rainbow Tiger Tail ’25
No smart-alec remarks about this one. It’s gorgeous!
An early-blooming Calibrachoa, originally released is 2022, improved for 2025.
Available from: Al’s Garden Cente
